Starts out cool. I was hoping for more apocalypse story and less whining. This is one of those stories where the main characters keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over again until you just want to throttle them.Tags : Promise Me Light - Kindle edition by Paige Weaver. Promise Me Light edition by Paige Weaver Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is the second book in the Promise Me series. It picks up pretty much where the first one left off. Ryder had left to go rescue Eva, however he was captured. Maddie never gave up even though he was seen being shot and Gavin and Cash said he probably was dead. There are a lot of flashbacks to their childhood. Months later he returns with injuries and it takes him weeks to recover. He finds out Maddie is pregnant and that his brother came on to her. He struggles with the torture and imprisonment, suffering from PTSD and pushing Maddie away. Feeling he is no good for her. They are all struggling to survive the harsh winter and the people that threaten them during the time of war. Maddie has the baby after Ryder comes to grips with everything and is there for her. The ending is really sweet and the prologue puts them 2 years in the future with Maddie pregnant again, the world still without electricity but recovering.
Promise Me Light (Promise Me #2)
By Paige Weaver
5/5 stars
At the end of book 1, Promise Me Darkness, the terrorists were gaining a stronghold in the U.S., Maddie had just figured out that she was pregnant, but she hadn’t told Ryder or any of the rest of their family. Then Brody (Eva’s boyfriend) and Cash (a friend from high school) showed up at the Delaney place asking for help because Eva had been kidnapped by the terrorists, taken to a concentration camp and they wanted help in rescuing her. Then Ryder, Gavin, Cash & Brody left for town, to rescue Eva.
The rescue party is gone longer than they had planned for and it starts to wear on Maddie’s nerves. She wasn’t able to tell Ryder about the baby before he left and she still hasn’t told any of the rest of the family. Being pregnant in this new life of survival is incredibly trying for any woman. First, just getting enough nutrition & food is tough enough, while things like prenatal vitamins and morning sickness pills are virtually a thing of the past. Add in all the everyday dangers, trying to find & gather baby supplies and lastly will come the birth. A birth that will end up being an all-natural at-home birth (since the hospital was taken over by the terrorists) with no modern day advances to save lives if something goes wrong during the birth.
As a group, they have to learn how to deal with a former prisoner, the scars they carry (both external & internal), the nightmares and how to help that person heal. There are quite a few newish struggles for the group as a whole to deal with, now that winter has moved in and there are new problems associated with the changing seasons.
I really like how the author goes through the everyday life problems, showing what a real struggle live would be if this were to ever happen in these modern times. Even though the story line may seem to progress slowly, I never felt like it was too slow, because I felt the everyday struggle that all the characters faced, just in order to survive.
This book does wrap up Ryder & Maddie’s story. We do get closure on understanding why Ryder always felt like he was never good enough for Maddie & felt like he was somewhat of an outcast and why he always pushed Maddie away. Both Ryder and Maddie grow in this book, but they are both still hot headed & stubborn.
The third book, Promise me once is being released on 4/19/2015 and that is Cash’s book. I’m not sure if it will pick-up where the epilogue left off or not, but either way, I plan on getting it immediately!
1.5 only because I wanted to read what happened with the US from the EMP attack. I had no interest in Ryder and Maddie. Both of them were terrible H and h. The rest of the review could be considered as spoilers, but is a brief recap of only a very few highlights of why this should not be on your buy list.
There is a constant push and pull from the I can't be with you to I have to have sex with you because you're mine and only mine and immediately afterwards turning back into a prick (yes I said it) to I can't be with you. The reader is to assume his reasoning is he's no good for her. Okay, maybe that's true, but if it is, who else would be better for the ever annoying Maddie since most of the US is in a state of turmoil and everyone is at their lowest of lows and barely surviving, if they lived at all. You might think he would try to push his brother on her because apparently a better person, but nope, his brother isn't allowed to even look at her without Ryder growling.
Sure they get their HEA, but I don't ever recall disliking a couple more than I did these two. Maddie continued to put herself in dangerous situations in this book, most of which she did because she was being ridiculously stubborn. And Ryder was always the hero coming to her resuce, which was supposed to be romantic, but instead was unbelievable because he would essentially rise from his death bed to save her and then collapse back to that same death bed.
Starts out cool. I was hoping for more apocalypse story and less whining. This is one of those stories where the main characters keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over again until you just want to throttle them.
